“Queen’s Iconic ‘Rock Montreal’ Concert Hits Disney+ with Imax Enhanced Sound by DTS”
“Queen Rock Montreal” is set to make its global streaming debut on Disney+ on May 15, featuring Imax Enhanced sound by DTS, marking a groundbreaking moment for concert films.
Originally released in theaters in January, the remastered 1981 concert became Imax’s most significant exclusive engagement. Now, it will join Disney+’s lineup alongside 18 Marvel films, all offering Imax Enhanced sound on supported devices. Bruce Markoe, Imax’s senior VP and head of Imax post and image capture, made the announcement during a panel at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.
The legendary concerts, starring Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, were held over two consecutive nights in November 1981, specifically filmed for a full-length concert movie to capture their electrifying live performance. The setlist includes timeless hits like “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Somebody to Love.” Imax restoration of the film was carried out by Mercury Studios, with executive producers Geoff Kempin and Alice Webb representing Mercury Studios, and Jim Beach and Matilda Beach representing Queen Films.
This announcement further solidifies the enduring partnership between Imax and Disney Entertainment. Alongside “Queen Rock Montreal,” Marvel blockbusters like “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” “Black Panther,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Guardians of the Galaxy (Volumes 2 and 3),” “Black Widow,” and “Doctor Strange” will also feature Imax Enhanced sound.
Moreover, Imax reveals its commitment to producing and distributing more concert movies in the future, expanding its content offerings. Imax Enhanced devices, including supported models from renowned manufacturers like Sony, Hisense, Sharp, Denon, and JBL, will ensure audiences experience the concert’s audio in unparalleled quality.
The NAB panel, moderated by Carolyn Giardina from Variety and Variety VIP+, facilitated the discussion surrounding this exciting development in the world of concert films.
