Nelly Furtado Goes Topless on New Album Cover and Shares Impact of ADHD on Creating Over 400 Songs

Nelly Furtado unveils her new album ‘7’ with a bold topless cover, discussing how ADHD fueled the creation of over 400 songs in a heartfelt social media announcement.

Canadian pop sensation Nelly Furtado has made a striking return, revealing her new album ‘7’ with a captivating topless album cover. The announcement, made on Thursday via an emotional social media post, also delved into the profound impact her ADHD has had on her music creation process, resulting in an impressive catalogue of over 400 songs over the past four years.

“This is going to sound strange and stupid but this isn’t a job for me. It’s super personal. Music is my whole language and life and love and blessing, so sometimes it’s hard for me to wrap that up in a bow,” the “Promiscuous” and “I’m Like a Bird” singer shared on Instagram. “I made 400-500 pieces of music in 4 years. My ADHD doesn’t always allow for me to organize creations in a methodical way so it’s hard to explain how we have chosen 14 songs that magically rose to the top of the heap. Phew – they come together just by nature of being in the same collection, 7, kind of like random seashells that may be similar but not at all alike.”

Furtado emphasized that her album “can’t be listened to like audio wallpaper,” expressing her hope to create “portals to trip out and release and escape” through her new music. “I badly need music every single day. I badly need songs to listen to every single day,” she concluded. “My brain doesn’t even work without music.”

In a revealing 2023 interview with FAULT magazine, the 45-year-old artist disclosed that she was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. “I believe I’ve had it my whole life, but playing instruments six days a week as a kid kept me in check,” she explained. “So now I’ve been using choreography and getting in the dance studio as a natural way of dealing with my ADHD. I find that discipline really helps my brain. The good news is I’m getting to know my brain really well. I love talking about it, so I’m hoping to share my experience with people and have conversations about it.”

Furtado has been steadily reclaiming her place in the mainstream music scene. After her last two albums, 2012’s ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ and 2017’s ‘The Ride,’ garnered less attention compared to her 2006 hit album ‘Loose’ and her 2000 debut ‘Whoa, Nelly!’, Furtado’s comeback is gaining momentum. She performed at Coachella in April and collaborated on the 2023 Dom Dolla single “Eat Your Man,” a track reminiscent of her previous hit “Maneater.” Additionally, she reunited with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland for last year’s “Keep Going Up,” promoting the song at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
