54 years ago today, the cremated remains of Janis Joplin (@janisjoplin) were scattered over the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach by airplane. Poetically serene and intimate as the familial affair must’ve been, there’s no denying that this was not the parting the fast-living legend had in mind. In fact and on no uncertain terms, the singer-songwriter left behind a lump sum of $2,500 for a celebration of life in the event of her inevitable demise.
As “a final gesture of appreciation and farewell”, friends and family would gather at the Lion’s Share hangout in San Anselmo, CA two weeks later on October 26th, 1970. True to the legendary spirit of #JanisJoplin, guests unwittingly bit off more than they could chew when the seemingly-innocuous brownies being served proved to be laced with hashish. While the indulgent affair would careen into the early hours of the following day, what remains a half-century onward are the time-honored anthems of a beloved artist and the perennial importance of embracing human endeavor with a sense of humor and devil-may-care passion for the ephemeral present.
