ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Steps Away from Tour Due to Health Issues

ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Temporarily Departs Tour Due to Health Issues

Frank Beard, the esteemed drummer for the legendary rock band ZZ Top, has stepped away from the group’s current tour to address a health issue, according to an official statement from the band’s management.

While specific details regarding Beard’s condition have not been disclosed, the 75-year-old musician is said to be focusing on his recovery. Beard has been a core member of ZZ Top for over 55 years, playing on all of the band’s albums and contributing to their signature blues-rock sound.

ZZ Top’s management company, Shelter Music Group, released an official statement on the matter, reassuring fans that Beard is prioritizing his health and intends to return soon.

“Shelter Music Group, ZZ Top’s management, has announced that the band’s drummer, Mr. Frank Beard, has temporarily stepped away from the current tour to attend to a health issue requiring his focus in the near term. Beard, along with ZZ Top members Billy F Gibbons and Elwood Francis, have been on the Elevation Tour since March 5. To ensure the continuity of the performances, the band has enlisted fellow Texan and longtime tech member, percussionist, and drummer John Douglas as a temporary replacement. Mr. Douglas has maintained a close relationship with Beard and the bandmates, having previously served with the group in the past.”

This is not the first time Douglas has stepped in for Beard. In 2002, he temporarily replaced him when the drummer underwent an appendectomy. The band expressed confidence in Douglas’s ability to maintain their high-energy performances as the tour continues.

ZZ Top, known for its enduring legacy in rock music, has reassured fans that Beard is looking forward to a speedy recovery. The Elevation Tour remains ongoing, with Douglas now handling drumming duties until Beard’s return.

Fans worldwide have taken to social media to send their well wishes to Beard, hoping for his quick recovery and return to the stage alongside his bandmates.

Music Is Facing a Mental Health Crisis

Money is tight while they work long and weird hours, travel incessantly, are isolated from their friends and family at home, and have ample access to drinks and drugs. They write, record, release, and promote, and then repeat the cycle over and over again. And now, more than ever, the industry demands constant content, lest they are forgotten in the ocean of songs hitting Spotify every Friday. But then they get in the van and, especially in Canada, drive absurd distances between low-paying gigs for a tour they likely had to book themselves.
