Tony Hawk Reflects on Kurt Cobain and Their Shared Grandchild

Tony Hawk has taken to social media to express his deep sentiments about the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, lamenting that Cobain isn’t here to witness the life of their shared grandson.

In September 2024, Hawk’s son, Riley, and Cobain’s daughter, Frances Bean, welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Ronin Walker Cobain Hawk. Frances announced the birth via social media, revealing that their son was born on September 17, 2024. “Welcome to the world, most beautiful son. We love you more than anything,” she wrote, sharing her joy with the world.

The marriage of Frances Bean Cobain and Riley Hawk in 2023 was a moment that resonated deeply with fans of ‘90s culture, as it brought together the legacies of two of the era’s most iconic figures—Kurt Cobain and Tony Hawk. Their union, and now the birth of their son, has created a unique intersection of music and skateboarding history, solidifying the influence of both grandfathers on future generations.

Over the weekend, Tony Hawk shared a nostalgic Instagram Story reflecting on the impact of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. He posted a picture of a ticket stub from an October 20, 1991, Nirvana concert at The Vatican, a now-defunct venue in Houston, Texas. Hawk recounted that he had been in town for a skateboarding competition and attended the show immediately afterward.

“It was as transformative as live music can possibly be,” Hawk wrote. “We all experienced something rare and powerful that night. The world would never be the same.”

The concert took place at a pivotal moment in Nirvana’s rise to fame. Less than a month before the show, the band had released their groundbreaking album Nevermind, which would soon become a cultural phenomenon. Just three months later, the record overtook Michael Jackson’s Dangerous to claim the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200, cementing Nirvana’s status as one of the most influential bands of all time.

Hawk concluded his post with a touching reflection on what he wished could have been: “I wish Kurt were here so he could see the incredible woman his daughter has become, meet her devoted, caring husband, and hold our wondrous grandchild.”

Both Nirvana and Tony Hawk have been in the spotlight recently. The surviving members of Nirvana reunited for special performances at the FireAid LA Benefit Concert and Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary celebration. Meanwhile, Hawk’s legendary video game series has stirred excitement in the gaming world amid rumors of an upcoming installment.

As Hawk’s heartfelt tribute reminds us, the legacies of both Kurt Cobain and Tony Hawk continue to shape music, sports, and pop culture, leaving an indelible mark on generations past, present, and future.
