Prince Estate Moves to Block Netflix Documentary Release

An Oscar-winning filmmaker has created a nine-hour documentary on the legendary musician Prince, set to premiere on Netflix. However, its release is now uncertain due to a legal dispute between the streaming giant and Prince’s estate.

The estate has reportedly raised objections to the documentary, demanding revisions to ensure the portrayal of Prince’s life remains accurate and respectful. While details of the requested changes have not been publicly disclosed, sources indicate that the estate is concerned about potential mischaracterizations or sensationalism in the film.

In a joint statement issued to The Hollywood Reporter in September, Primary Wave and Prince Legacy—two entities managing Prince’s estate—clarified their stance:

“We are working to resolve matters concerning the documentary so that his story may be told in a way that is factually correct and does not mischaracterize or sensationalize his life.”

Netflix has not provided an immediate response to inquiries regarding the situation.

The legal battle highlights the challenges of preserving the legacy of a celebrated artist while balancing creative storytelling and factual representation. For now, the future of the Prince documentary remains uncertain as discussions continue.
