Montreal’s Iconic Muzique Nightclub to Close After Nearly Two Decades
After almost two decades of unforgettable nights, Muzique, a staple of Montreal’s vibrant nightlife, is set to close its doors. Located on St-Laurent Boulevard, the iconic nightclub gained fame for its wild parties, lively atmosphere, and high-energy music. The venue has been a cornerstone of the city’s club scene since its opening in 2009, hosting some of the world’s most renowned DJs, including Tiesto, Deadmau5, and the late Avicii.
The announcement of the closure was made by John Gumbley, one of Muzique’s owners and the president of JeGantic, a hospitality group. Gumbley described the decision as “bittersweet,” acknowledging the legacy the club leaves behind while emphasizing the need for change.
“The last year, with changing trends and the venue aging, it’s simply run its course,” Gumbley said during a recent interview. “It’s time to shut it down, and we’re preparing for one final dance this February.”
The Changing Nightlife Scene
Gumbley attributed the decision to several factors, including shifts in nightlife trends. He noted that younger generations are drinking and partying less, which has impacted the overall clubbing industry. Additionally, prolonged road construction on St-Laurent Boulevard over the years has disrupted traffic and contributed to a decline in foot traffic along the once-thriving artery.
Despite these challenges, Muzique maintained its reputation as a premier party destination. “Muzique was like the last ‘boy scout’ of clubs,” Gumbley said. “It was a place where anything went—a bit raunchy, a lot of fun, and full of energy.”
A New Beginning
While Muzique’s closure marks the end of an era, the venue itself will not remain dormant for long. Under new management, the space is set to undergo a complete transformation. Gumbley revealed plans for a full-scale renovation that will modernize the club while elevating its ambiance to appeal to a higher-end clientele.
“The same locale will be entirely revamped,” Gumbley explained. “We’ll clean up everything, update the bathrooms, and give it a fresh, modern vibe. There are many surprises in store.”
One Final Blowout
Before the doors close for good, Muzique plans to host one final event—a grand farewell party to celebrate its legacy. Gumbley described the event as a chance for partygoers to let loose one last time.
“The whole idea is all-out fun. It’s about losing your inhibitions and fully enjoying the experience,” he said.
For those who have fond memories of the venue—or those who want to be part of its final chapter—this last celebration promises to be an unforgettable send-off for one of Montreal’s most legendary nightclubs.
Muzique’s closure is not just the end of a beloved club, but a reflection of the evolving dynamics of Montreal’s nightlife. As the venue prepares for its next chapter, it leaves behind nearly two decades of legendary nights and countless memories for those who walked through its doors.
