Metallica Donates $40,000 to Daily Bread Food Bank Following Sold-Out Toronto Shows

Metallica, the iconic heavy metal band, has demonstrated their ongoing commitment to giving back by making a significant donation to help fight hunger in Toronto. After performing two sold-out shows at Rogers Centre as part of their global M72 World Tour, the band pledged $40,000 to the Daily Bread Food Bank through their nonprofit foundation, All Within My Hands (AWMH).

This generous contribution comes at a critical time. The city of Toronto declared food insecurity a state of emergency in December 2024, underlining the growing scale of the crisis. According to the 2024 Who’s Hungry report, more than one in ten Torontonians now rely on food banks. Between January and March alone, Daily Bread member food banks recorded nearly one million visits—four times higher than the same period in 2020.

“This incredibly generous donation from Metallica will make a real difference,” said Neil Hetherington, CEO of Daily Bread Food Bank. “Far too many people in our city are struggling to put food on the table. These funds will help support clients as we face an unprecedented hunger crisis. The fact that the band has a history of supporting our cause makes this gift even more meaningful.”

Daily Bread Food Bank estimates that every dollar donated provides a full meal, meaning Metallica’s donation will supply approximately 40,000 meals. These meals include fresh produce, dairy, and protein, and are distributed across 205 food programs throughout the city.

Renée Richardson, Director of Philanthropy at AWMH, emphasized the foundation’s awareness and concern about Toronto’s hunger crisis.
“Learning that there is widespread food insecurity in Toronto reminds us just how many people are faced with making tough decisions and need assistance,” she said. “We are thankful Daily Bread is there to bridge the gap for so many families.”

Established in 2017, Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation was created to support communities around the world that have supported the band throughout their career. Since its founding, AWMH has raised more than $20 million for various charitable causes.

This isn’t Metallica’s first time supporting the Daily Bread Food Bank. In 2016, they donated proceeds from a surprise performance at Toronto’s Opera House to the organization, reinforcing their long-standing commitment to helping those in need.

Metallica’s contribution underscores the importance of community support and shines a spotlight on the ongoing challenges many Toronto residents face in accessing food.

Music Is Facing a Mental Health Crisis

Money is tight while they work long and weird hours, travel incessantly, are isolated from their friends and family at home, and have ample access to drinks and drugs. They write, record, release, and promote, and then repeat the cycle over and over again. And now, more than ever, the industry demands constant content, lest they are forgotten in the ocean of songs hitting Spotify every Friday. But then they get in the van and, especially in Canada, drive absurd distances between low-paying gigs for a tour they likely had to book themselves.
