Los Lobos Bring Over 50 Years of Music To Toronto

On Saturday, March 8, I attended a spectacular concert at Toronto’s prestigious Koerner Hall, an acoustically superb venue renowned for its elegant design and warm ambiance. The night featured a performance by Los Lobos, a band whose music has been a part of my life since childhood. My earliest musical memory is tied to the La Bamba soundtrack created by this legendary group.

The auditorium was filled with fans of all ages eagerly anticipating the show. Among the audience were notable figures such as members of The Trews, Broken Social Scene, and Jake Gold from Canadian Idol. The atmosphere was electric, signaling we were about to witness something extraordinary.

Los Lobos took the stage and showcased their incredible versatility, seamlessly blending blues, rock, Mexican folk music, and more. Their signature triple-guitar attack resonated deeply with the audience, delivering an unforgettable experience that felt both powerful and soulful. Their reputation as “the hardest working band in show business” is well-earned; with over 50 years of relentless touring and recording, they’ve cultivated a global following.

The performance began with a heartfelt dedication to Garth Hudson of The Band, who had recently passed away. They opened with “Dream in Blue,” followed by “Marciela,” a classic Mexican Spanish tune. The setlist included favorites like “Is This All There Is?” and Richie Valens’ iconic “Come On Let’s Go.” They embraced their Chicano roots with “Chucos Cumbia” before shifting gears into “The Neighborhood.”

The evening continued with hits such as “La Pistola Y El Corazon,” “Saint Behind The Glass,” “Arizona Skies,” and “Kiko and the Lavender Moon.” They also performed several covers, including Santiago Jiménez’s “Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio,” The Grateful Dead’s “Bertha,” Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl,” and Joséito Fernández’s “Guantanamera.”

After leaving the stage, the crowd clamored for an encore. Los Lobos returned to deliver the performance everyone had been waiting for: La Bamba. The seated venue transformed into a dance party as fans celebrated this timeless classic.
