Jack White Makes Surprise Visit to Toronto’s Iconic Steve’s Music Store

A visit from Jack White is enough to electrify any music store, and that’s exactly what happened when the rock icon made an unannounced stop at Toronto’s legendary Steve’s Music Store.

Though originally a Montreal-based chain, Steve’s Toronto location, open since 1977, has cemented itself as a staple in the city’s music scene. For decades, it has served musicians of all levels, from aspiring artists to seasoned professionals. The store’s deep-rooted reputation has made it a magnet for celebrity musicians over the years, and Jack White is the latest to walk through its doors.

White, best known as the former frontman of The White Stripes, visited the shop with his backing band on February 7, ahead of his two-night performance at Massey Hall on February 7 and 8. Store manager Stefano was the first to spot him.

“I was coming down from the second floor, and then I see that guy,” Stefano recalled in an interview with blogTO. “Then I went to check who was playing that night, and it was Jack White.”

It didn’t take long for the rest of the store’s staff—composed entirely of music lovers—to recognize the rock star. White was accompanied by his band members, including his drummer, who picked up a fresh set of drumsticks. His manager also joined the group and graciously snapped a photo of Stefano alongside the musician.

Although White himself didn’t make a purchase, he didn’t leave empty-handed. Stefano presented him with a Steve’s Music Store t-shirt as a memento of his visit to the city.

While Stefano admits he isn’t White’s biggest fan, the encounter left a lasting impression. “We could only get one photo,” he said, “but I wish I wasn’t in the middle of blinking.”

Stefano, originally from Italy, shared that the moment felt surreal. “I grew up seeing him on rock TV channels there, and when Italy won the World Cup, they used the melody from ‘Seven Nation Army’ every day. So, when I shook his hand, I was kind of sweating a little bit. I couldn’t believe it was Jack White.”

Steve’s Music Store has welcomed its fair share of famous faces over the years, including Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. Yet, each visit remains a thrilling experience for staff and customers alike.

Located at 415 Queen Street West, Steve’s Music Store continues to be a hub for musicians and music lovers, adding another legendary encounter to its long history.

Music Is Facing a Mental Health Crisis

Money is tight while they work long and weird hours, travel incessantly, are isolated from their friends and family at home, and have ample access to drinks and drugs. They write, record, release, and promote, and then repeat the cycle over and over again. And now, more than ever, the industry demands constant content, lest they are forgotten in the ocean of songs hitting Spotify every Friday. But then they get in the van and, especially in Canada, drive absurd distances between low-paying gigs for a tour they likely had to book themselves.
