Justin Young, lead vocalist of The Vaccines, believes there’s a difference between having fun and being happy, and their sixth album, Pick-Up Full of Pink Carnations, explores the space between these concepts. The record is a burst of energy with 10 tracks in just over half an hour, yet it delves into themes of loss and the harsh realities of life that contrast with our curated social media personas.
The album’s title is inspired by a misremembered lyric from Don McLean’s American Pie, sparking reflections on Young’s disillusionment with the American dream, especially after moving to LA. The album captures the feeling of loss—not just romantic, but also the loss of dreams and expectations.
The opening track, “Sometimes, I Swear”, sets the tone with lyrics that speak to the gap between reality and expectations. Young’s feelings of loneliness and displacement are evident throughout the album, despite the upbeat, pop-infused melodies. This contrast between somber themes and lively music is intentional, aiming to connect with listeners on a deep, emotional level.
The album marks a new chapter for The Vaccines, with Timothy Lanham stepping up as lead guitarist after Freddie Cowan’s departure. The band recorded the album with producer Andrew Wells, known for his work in pop, adding a fresh twist to their classic sound. Despite the changes, the band remains true to their signature style—euphoric, melancholic, and always direct.
