Songwriters in the Round XXXII
March 27 /8:00 pm 11:00 pm
Hosted by Gillian Nicola
Featuring: Noah Derksen, Karen Morand Music, Tim Watson
WEDNESDAY MARCH 27, 2019 @ 8PM
The Painted Lady (218 OSSINGTON AVE., TORONTO)
Never been to an In The Round? These concerts focus on the stories behind the music, and the songs themselves. The music is stripped back to allow listeners to really experience the songs at the most authentic level. What it also means is that we won’t be having ‘sets’ per se – all four songwriters will be on stage together the whole time!
Gillian Nicola (Host)
The first thing that strikes listeners about Hamilton’s Gillian Nicola is the strength of her vocals. This rising singer/songwriter calls on influences of folk, rock and alt-country to bring a sound both unique to her and that honours her diverse taste.
Born and raised in the heart of the Canadian prairies and maturing on the west coast of British Columbia, Noah Derksen writes with the groundedness of harsh Manitoba winters mixed with the optimism of British Columbia’s coastline. Ever seeking motion and progression, Noah has spent the past three years honing his live performance skills across Canada and in select regions of the United States, playing concerts from BC to Nova Scotia, and New York to California. On March 1st, 2019, Noah will be releasing “Part One” of a new full-length album.
Toronto born, Windsor-based Karen Morand comes armed with original songs and feisty, powerhouse vocals. In her lively performance, she serves up alt- folk with well-worn blues and gritty gospel on the side.
Tim Watson is a singer/songwriter who originates from the Durham Region, but now resides in Toronto. He is heavily influenced by his classical upbringing as a child and by the likes of Joni Mitchell, K.D. Lang, Stephen Stills, and Ray Lamontagne.
