Hosted by Gillian Nicola
Featuring: Andy Griffiths and the Lost Groove, Karen Morand Music, Alex Ginella Band
WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 27, 2019 @ 8PM
The Painted Lady (218 OSSINGTON AVE., TORONTO)
Never been to an In The Round? These concerts focus on the stories behind the music, and the songs themselves. The music is stripped back to allow listeners to really experience the songs at the most authentic level. What it also means is that we won’t be having ‘sets’ per se – all four songwriters will be on stage together the whole time!
Gillian Nicola (Host)
The first thing that strikes listeners about Hamilton’s Gillian Nicola is the strength of her vocals. This rising singer/songwriter calls on influences of folk, rock and alt-country to bring a sound both unique to her and that honours her diverse taste.
ANDY is a energetic and passionate rootsy folk rock singer/songwriter. Gut feeling and personal experience form the basis of his tunes! You may catch yourself tapping toes and singing along with the chorus!
Toronto born, Windsor-based Karen Morand comes armed with original songs and feisty, powerhouse vocals. In her lively performance, she serves up alt- folk with well-worn blues and gritty gospel on the side.
Here’s the thing about Alex, he knows how to play.
Make no mistake, he knows how to work too -no one teaches themselves to play the fiddle that well without work- but it’s what he does with the spoils of the effort that sets him apart: he plays. With every leap and holler the word conjures, he throws himself into his instruments and leaves nothing out. And in the spaces between that joyful riot Alex cuts in, clear and strong, with the words of his heart. Alex grew up halfway in Montreal, the rest in Calgary, and has spent most of the musical years of his life playing with his band Rotary Park; touring everywhere from Cape Breton to Vancouver Island. His songs share the melodies of those places and tell of the lessons he’s learned there. With his first EP he continues to cast out into the world with a deep curiosity and, as always, a sense of play.
