Luan Phung Quintet
March 23 /7:00 pm 9:00 pm
Luan Phung (born 1991in London, England) is a Toronto based improviser, composer, and guitarist who works in a broad spectrum of experimental idioms. Though his improvisational and compositional approach is often described as “polymetric”, “complex” and “modern” his conception is deeply rooted in the jazz and classical tradition. His distinct music reflects his reverence of jazz artists such as Lester Young, Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh, and John Coltrane, as well as composers such as J.S. Bach, Igor Stravinsky, Anton Webern, Olivier Messiaen, and Pierre Boulez. His exploration of serial/dodecaphonic and spectral/overtone language within improvisational contexts, puts him on the vanguard of ‘up and coming’ young artists.
As a young classical guitarist, he garnered many musical accolades including four consecutive Royal Conservatory of Music silver medals for the highest practical examination mark in the province, four time first place gold medals at Performing Arts BC, a finalist for the renowned Kay Meek scholarship Competition, and a national finalist at the Canadian Music Competition, among others. Luan was chosen to play in the TD Canada Trust High School Jazz Intensive, led by the anchor of Chicago’s jazz scene, renowned and innovative flautist Nicole Mitchel and winning the CanFor scholarship in conjunction with the Vancouver International Jazz festival, as well as being chosen to play in the Ottawa Youth Summit All-star Band, led by Canadian trumpet maverick Jim Lewis and winning the Galaxie Rising Star award for jazz performance. He was awarded the Ten Quinlan Guitar Award at Humber College. In addition, Luan was recently chosen to perform at TEDxToronto 2012 in collaboration with Toronto hip hop trio BADBADNOTGOOD, whom he worked with on their latest album BBNG2.
