Jon Shearsmith is a multi-faceted Guitarist/Composer/Producer based in Toronto, Canada. While his main focus is on Jazz, he is experienced playing a variety of genres ranging from RnB, Funk, Folk, Rock and Metal. Born and raised in Canada’s cultural epicenter, he was exposed to Music at an early age. “I was given my first guitar when I was 13 and everything seemed to fall in place after that,” says the Toronto born Shearsmith. By the time he was in High School, he began leading a band and had also taught himself how to play Drums and Bass. It was at this time that he started gigging across Toronto playing at venues such as Lee’s Palace and The Big Bop, among many others. “Even though I was barely old enough to drive, I was booking shows, writing my own music and building my own recording studio,” says Shearsmith on inception of his career. Upon graduating High School, he was accepted to study Music at Canada’s prestigious Humber College to further his knowledge and satiate his growing intrigue with Jazz music. So far, he has had the opportunity to study with some of Canada’s most renowned guitarists such as Geoff Young (Kenny Wheeler), Ted Quinlan (Tony Monaco), and Trevor Giancola (Sophie Millman). In addition to the knowledge he has acquired from these guitar greats, he has also had the opportunity to play in ensembles led by Mark Kelso (Herbie Hancock, John Scofield) and Will Jarvis. During the summer months in between school he obtained weekly residencies at venues across Toronto where he learned the true essence of Jazz music.
