Christmas Ball: Alex Pangman & Her Alleycats | Jazz Bistro
December 21, 2018 /9:00 pm 11:00 pm
Join Canada’s sweetheart of swing, Alex Pangman and her Alleycats for an evening Christmas music at Toronto’s Jazz Bistro on Friday, December 21st at 9pm. Reservations highly recommended – call 416-363-5299.
Vocals/ Leader: Justin Time Records recording artist Alex Pangman has been called “Canada’s sweetheart of swing.” Her JUNO nominated recent album “New” pays homage to the songs of the 1930s, ably proving the music is still relevant & alive. Her style has all the vivacity and steppin’ out glee of the Jazz Age & with a voice all her own, you’ll hear influences of Kay Starr, a young Ella Fitzgerald, and Ruth Etting. Pangman has worked with Bucky and John Pizarelli, Denzal Sinclaire, Ron Sexsmith, Jim Galloway, and Jeff Healey.
Piano: Peter Hill can be considered “a singer’s best friend”. He’s been working with Alex Pangman for a decade, as well as supporting Laura Hubert, Girls Night Out, and being the steady on-call pianist on the Toronto trad scene. His own Quintet CD “For Now” got rave reviews.
Drums: Glenn Anderson is a scene maker. The perpetually busy drummer cites Buddy Rich & Gene Krupa as influences, whilst bringing his own “Anderson flair” to the kit. The flair has kept him steadily on stage with Pangman, Big Rude Jake, Red Hot Ramble, and a heaping handful of the best trad bands around. His own CD, “Swingin’ The Blues” came out in 2003.
Bass: Chris Banks is a graduate of Mohawk College, and a much in demand jazz bassist. “International Banks” has worked from Dubai to Seoul, Victoria to St. Johns: and has held a spot with Pangman for five years. Always the comedian, it’s no joke to say that his playing is solid.
Cornet: John Macleod is a JUNO winning cornet and flugelhorn player. His distinctive style has been brewing since he began studying trumpet at age 12 in Toronto, and becoming an aficionado of New Orleans, Chicago and swing styles of the music. He has played in the Boss Brass, and is a professor at Humber College (where he himself studied), arranger, and band leader of his own Rex Hotel Orchestra.
Saxophone: John MacMurchy is a woodwind specialist who has played with a check list of jazz luminaries including Cleo Laine, Peter Appleyard, Warren Vache, Guido Basso, as well as being in demand as a sideman on the Toronto scene.
