Derev Announces Kick-Off Tour Dates for “Troubled Mind” Release

Toronto progressive rock band Derev is preparing to launch a tour across Ontario and Quebec in support of their highly anticipated debut album, “Troubled Mind,” set for release on March 26, 2025. Following the success of their 2021 EP, “Leap of Faith,” this new full-length release takes their distinctive sound to new heights, blending intricate progressive rock arrangements with deep-rooted Middle Eastern influences.

Derev was founded by drummer Michel Karakach, who, after fleeing war in the Middle East and resettling in Toronto, reconnected with longtime friend and guitarist Armando Bablanian. Their shared musical vision turned a childhood dream into a bold artistic statement, establishing Derev as a force within the progressive rock scene.

“Troubled Mind” builds upon the foundation set by “Leap of Faith,” incorporating a broader range of musical textures. The album balances serene, introspective moments with high-energy, complex compositions, all while staying true to their signature fusion of modern progressive rock and traditional Middle Eastern elements. Expanding their sonic palette, the band introduces new instruments such as the Cajon and Darbuka, integrates electronic components, and experiments with intricate time signatures. The inclusion of more prominent keyboard arrangements further enriches the album’s depth and complexity.

Unlike their debut EP, which addressed broad societal issues such as war, technology, and injustice, “Troubled Mind” shifts its focus inward. The album explores various mental states and internal dialogues, capturing the nuances of human thought processes. “While we offer some kind of resolution in a few tracks, the purpose of the album is to explore and highlight these different states of mind rather than try to resolve them,” the band explains.

Derev’s lineup has also evolved, with bassist Stan Komarovsky anchoring the band’s sound and keyboardist Ran Zehavi of the progressive rock band Scalar adding further dimension. Leading the live performances is frontman and vocalist Mike Symons, who steps in to replace previous singer Adel Saflou, featured on “Troubled Mind.” Symons brings a compelling stage presence and vocal intensity that completes the band’s live ensemble.

With their debut full-length album on the horizon, Derev continues to push musical boundaries, offering listeners an innovative and deeply personal listening experience. Their ability to seamlessly blend progressive rock with Middle Eastern musical elements sets them apart in the genre. As they embark on their Ontario and Quebec tour, fans can expect electrifying performances that showcase the band’s evolving artistry and dynamic sound.

Stay tuned for the official tour dates and venue announcements as Derev prepares to bring “Troubled Mind” to audiences across Canada.
